Petsch in Fifth Place After Day One of MWC Championships

FORT WORTH, Texas -

The first of four days of competition is over at the Outdoor Mountain West Conference Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. The heptathlon and decathlon got under way Wednesday with Wyoming's own, Jay Petsch currently sitting in fifth place overall with a total of 3,408 points.

The men are led by BYU freshman, Chase Dalton after five events with a total of 3,690 points. On the day the men competed in the 100-meter dash, the long jump, the shot put, the high jump and the 400-meter dash.

Petsch placed third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.16, then slipped to sixth in the long jump with a leap of 20' 9 1/4". The third event of the day was the shot put where Petsch placed seventh with a toss of 34' 7 1/5", he also placed seventh in the high jump where he crossed the bar at 5' 7 1/4". The final event of the day for the men was the 400-meter dash where Jay finished strong and won the race with a time of 49.18.

"Jay (Petsch) is doing a great job and hanging tough with some of the best in the conference," said UW assistant coach Quincy Howe. "He ended the day on a great note by winning and setting a new personal best in the 400-meter dash and in the 100-meter dash. He is a tough competitor and will leave it all out on the track tomorrow."

As for the women, they are led by Colorado State's Emily Pearson with a total of 3,407 points.

The decathlon and heptathlon will finish up tomorrow with the final five events beginning at noon. (MT)
